Long time!

I see it's been five years since I last posted here and honestly I had forgotten I still had this blog up and running. Perhaps it's time to renew it again and get back to talking about books. Although talking about books is something I have not ever given up on. The past five years have seen a lot of changes in my family life as well as in our book club. We've said good-bye to far too many of our faithful members who are greatly missed. I've not been as active in recent years either but I still look forward to every third Wednesday and try to keep up with our book list as much as possible. I'm always amazed at the amount of insight, education and intelligent talk at every meeting.

Last month (August) was my turn lead the discussion and my selection was A Pleasure and a Calling by Phil Hogan. It was quite a departure from my usual reading fare but opened up some interesting discussion. The premise is a dark look into the mind of a sociopath, a seemingly mild mannered real estate agent in England who enjoys snooping on his neighbors. With his access to all the keys from the houses he's sold, he slips into their homes and consequently their lives. The story takes an increasingly darker turn as the reader uncovers more about the man's backstory and traumatic childhood experiences. I was a bit nervous choosing this story for our reading group discussion, not knowing if the ladies (and now one gentleman reader) would love or hate it. Fortunately they all loved it and found something intriguing to offer in discussion.

Next month's pick is The Chalk Man by C.J. Tudor, which I've been told is on a similar theme to Hogan's book. I have yet to read it but now have it waiting on my Audible app to listen to this week and will get back with more on our book club's take on this selection.
